Equity, diversity, and inclusion
At Construction Safety Nova Scotia (CSNS), we aim to foster an inclusive workplace where everyone is welcomed and diverse backgrounds are represented — and we encourage all our members across the construction industry to do the same.
We recognize the value of all people to fully participate in the labour market and that many are under-represented. Overcoming barriers to participation through working collaboratively with system stakeholders is a high priority for the association. From a safety perspective, education and awareness are areas where we can have a positive impact.
This work continues with a focus on board recruitment, course development and delivery, and strategic partnerships.
According to a report from the Canadian Construction Association, diversity and inclusion is good for business. Here are some reasons why:
- Accelerates innovation with diverse perspectives and new ideas.
- Increases employee productivity and revenue.
- Reduces employee turnover.
- Drives a positive safety culture.
- Expands market share with supplier diversity.
- Enhances your reputation and expands your customer base.
As the construction workforce becomes more diverse in Nova Scotia, employers must ensure their workplace is a psychologically safe environment for all individuals. Being safe at work is more than just wearing your fall protection; it includes feeling safe to be yourself no matter how you identify or where you’re from.
The CSNS staff has received training on cultural sensitivity, micro-aggressions, LGBTQ awareness, and Indigenous Peoples cultural awareness. We are currently working with Glooscap First Nation to offer safety training to their community members.
